In the graphics and imaging industry, color management plays a crucial role in producing high-quality and consistent visuals across different platforms and devices. Blender, a 3D graphics and animation software, has become a popular and powerful tool among its user community. However, for Blender to be recognized as an official tool in the industry, the use of the ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) color space is indispensable.

Below is a description of the ACES color space extension for Blender that I provide for free:

The ACES color space extension is a tool that allows users to integrate and utilize the ACES color space within the Blender workflow. With this extension, you can easily apply the ACES color space to your Blender projects and enjoy the benefits of using ACES.

This extension enables you to perform the following steps:

  1. Install the ACES color management system: The extension provides the necessary files and configurations to use the ACES color space in Blender. You need to install the ACES color management system on your computer before using this extension.
Copy - paste and change "colormanagement" to "colormanagement.bak"
    "C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender 3.5\3.5\datafiles\colormanagement"
Copy all data in ACES Blender Color Workspace to "colormanagement" folder

  2. Activate ACES in Blender: Open Blender and access the "Color Management" section in the "Render Properties" tab. Set the "View Transform" to "ACES" and the "Look" to "None" or choose from the available ACES Look options if desired.
  3. Assign the appropriate input and output color spaces: In the "Color Management" section, set the "Input Device" and "Output Device" to match your specific color management workflow. These settings determine how colors are interpreted and displayed in Blender.
  4. Adjust brightness and gamma: Depending on the scene and personal preferences, you may need to adjust the brightness and gamma settings to achieve the desired output. These settings can also be adjusted within the "Color Management" section.
  5. Render and output in ACES format: When rendering your scene, make sure to select the ACES color space for the output. This ensures that the final image or animation is in the ACES color space.
